Dying Easter Egg With Nature

Creating beautifully colored, Easter eggs naturally is possible – with a little bit of creativity you can create vibrant, non-toxic eggs with an all-natural dye from spices and produce you have in the house.

Step 1: Keeping it Clean

Wash your hands in hot soapy water before and after (count to 20). This protects everyone from any bacteria & it will prevent any oil or grime to get onto the eggshell.

Step 2: Ingredients for the Dye

·       Lavender / Red – 1 cup red onion skins

·       Pink – 1 cup of shredded beets

·       Orange – 1 cup yellow onion skins

·       Yellow – 1 tablespoon turmeric (add to boiling water)

·       Blue – 1 cup of red/purple cabbage

·       Brown/Green – 1 cup of spinach

·       Purple/silver/blue – 1 cup of blueberries (skip vinegar)

Step 3: Making the Dye

1.    Combine one quart of water and two tablespoons of white vinegar in a medium pot.

2.    Bring to a boil and add your dye ingredients.

3.    Once boiling, lower heat and simmer for 30 minutes. Let cool.

4.    Strain dye before adding the eggs. Once strained, let soak for at least 30 minutes.

5.    Remove with pasta serving spoon.

Tips and Tricks

Can I use brown eggs?

Yes! It will vary the color of your colored eggs; it will be fun to see the different shades.

Get Creative!

Have your kids draw on eggs with a wax crayon or add tape before dying. Gently remove the tape after dying. Other fun ideas you can try are the following (Note these maybe not be completely non-toxic)
