5 Ways to Prevent Mold in Your Bathroom
Ah, the bathroom—the place where we go to freshen up and end up battling mold! Mold seems to think it owns the place, creeping up in corners and claiming your shower tiles as its paradise. But fear not! Here are five easy (and refreshingly natural) ways to show that mold who's boss.
1. Ventilation is Key: You know that lovely, steamy fog that happens when you take a hot shower? Well, mold loves that, too. The first step in keeping your bathroom mold-free is making sure it's well-ventilated. Turn on the exhaust fan or, if you’re lucky enough to have a window, crack it open a bit to let the moisture escape. No fan or window? Leave the door open a bit after showering to let the steam out. The more air circulation, the less mold-friendly your bathroom will be! Also, consider getting an air purifier - one of my favorite purifers to help bust-up mold is the KHAOS which uses multi-cluster ionization (MCI) technology.
2. Regular Cleaning Routine: We know, cleaning the bathroom isn’t exactly thrilling. But regular cleaning can make a huge difference. Wipe down surfaces like tiles, sinks, and countertops to keep moisture at bay. Aim for a quick clean once a week, focusing on those damp areas where mold might think about setting up shop. Even just a quick wipe after a shower can help reduce buildup and keep things fresh.
3. Baking Soda Magic: his household hero can tackle mold and leave your bathroom sparkling. Just mix it with a bit of water to make a paste, spread it over grout lines or any mold-prone spots, let it sit for a few minutes, then give it a good scrub and rinse. Its gentle abrasiveness scrubs away mold and leaves surfaces looking fresh without a fuss—like a mini makeover for your bathroom!
4. Lemon Freshness: Not only do they smell amazing, but lemon juice is naturally antibacterial, making it a mold-fighting buddy. Just mix equal parts lemon juice and water in a spray bottle, give mold-prone spots a spritz, and voilà—your bathroom smells zesty and fresh! It’s like a little spa day for your tiles. Just a heads-up: if you’ve got marble or granite surfaces, use this sparingly. Citrus has a pH around 3 and can eat away the finish or discolor it. (Yes, I am speaking from experience.)
5. Tea Tree Oil Defense: Last but definitely not least, tea tree oil is a mold-fighting powerhouse. It’s a natural fungicide that mold can’t stand. Add a few drops of tea tree oil to a spray bottle filled with water, shake it up, and spray it in the shower, on the tiles, or even on shower curtains. Let it sit for a few minutes, then wipe clean. Tea tree oil does the heavy lifting, all while giving your bathroom a nice, clean scent.
And for the Bonus: Kangen water at a pH of 2.5—aka Hypochlorous Acid—is like mold’s worst nightmare. This stuff is a powerhouse disinfectant with serious antimicrobial properties. It takes down mold and mildew on contact, all while keeping things natural and free from harsh chemicals.
